Clarinet teaching

The Clarinet is a wonderful and unique instrument, with a rich tradition and application in many styles of music. I am in love with its beautiful sound since growing up in Germany.

I teach Clarinet, Chamber Music, and Music History at Portland State University in Portland/ Oregon, while also serving as Head of Woodwinds.

PSU Students

My  teaching is a blend of traditional and modern methods from Europe and the United States. Webbed into this mix are my own ideas and methods, developed through experience and intended to help students reach their individual goals.

I regularly introduce, research, and perform lesser-known works to broaden the students’ perspectives and to advocate for diversity in music.

The clarinet studio is a healthy mix of undergraduate and graduate students who pursue different degrees.

Clarinet ensembles of all sizes, along with exposure to different playing traditions and instruments, are an integral part of my educational program. Students are encouraged to perform on the school’s chalumeau and to participate in the Zephyr Clarinet Choir.

At the PSU School of Music, we also regularly invite renowned clarinetists to work with our students in masterclasses. Rolf Weber, who plays the German clarinet system, has visited the clarinet studio as a resident artist on four occasions.

These masterclasses further highlight student–teacher legacies, including collaborations with my former UCLA teacher, the iconic Hollywood musician Gary Gray.
